richard S. Dick, PHD.

 Dr. Dick is an internationally recognized expert in the electronic health record (EHR) industry and has provided diverse consulting services, addressing technical architectures, strategic planning and extensive business development for many of today’s most successful health IT and EHR companies. 

Demonstrated accomplishments in the following areas: 

  • Healthcare IT, Healthcare Informatics, Interoperability and Big Data / Analytics 

  • Experienced serial-Entrepreneur, also engaged executing Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A)

  •  Visionary/creator of pragmatic, innovative solutions that solve toughest business challenges

  • Designer/Architect of complex systems (e.g. EHRs/EMRs/PHRs, largest MPI’s in healthcare) 

  • Directed IOM’s Landmark study, produced the book that launched our EHR-world of today 

  • Veteran of both the NIH and NAM - Senior Staff Officer at the National Academy of Medicine (Institute of Medicine-IOM) 

Dr. Dick has a unique blend of education and experience that have brought him international recognition for advancing electronic health record technologies (EHR, EMR, PHR) from multiple standpoints: as a visionary, a designer/architect, and as an industry spokesperson (long list of international speaking engagements [selected for and did an “around the world” lecture tour] – including guest lecturer at both Harvard and Yale. Profound “Biz Dev” and consulting skills – has consulted for over 200 companies including many of Fortune 100 companies (e.g. GE, Lockheed Martin…) and major healthcare providers (IDNs) and also internationally for governments around the world. Most recently, engaged by the European Research Council (ERC)!

Awards, Publications, and a Few Additional Distinguishing / Notable Achievements 

Dr. Dick was the recipient of the “Award for Excellence, Outstanding Achievement, and Special Recognition in Applied Medical Informatics” presented by the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS) – and is one of the few non-MDs to have ever received this Award. Also, Dr. Dick has published three books as well as many published articles and has been a featured speaker at nearly a hundred events / conferences. A few highlights of these publications, and articles by Dr. Dick include:

  • Founder and Executive Director of Coalition to Create the Computer-based Patient Record Institute (CPRI) merged into HIMSS. 

  • Study Director (IOM’s Landmark Study) & Senior Staff Officer at the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine (IOM) 

  • Deputy Chief of the Bibliographic Services Division (MEDLINE-Worldwide), National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the NIH 

  • Built largest Rx Databases in the U.S.A. (e.g. 270M+ American’s Rx data updated every 24 hours by all 60K+ retail pharmacies) 

  • Built the largest MPI’s in healthcare IT – 200M+ people in just one of these MPI systems & THE only operational, nationwide RLS 

  • At age 18, privileged to record with NY Philharmonic, Philadelphia Philharmonic and performed in Carnegie Hall twice
